MBW Vapor Extraction Unit

The MBW Vapor Extraction Unit (VEU) is designed to improve how natural gas utilities approach subsurface leak detection and remediation. Using controlled vacuum technology, the system draws gas vapors from saturated soil while continuously monitoring gas concentration levels, providing crews with valuable information for identifying the source and extent of a leak.

Originally developed to address the challenges of finding underground gas leaks, the technology can also be used to remove residual gas from affected soil after the leak source has been addressed. More precise leak location can help crews avoid unnecessary digging and surface disturbance while accelerating the overall remediation process.

VEU systems are available in mobile configurations, including trailer-mounted, skid-mounted, and truck-mounted platforms, giving utility crews options for urban, rural, and multi-site operations.

Key Features

High-Capacity Vapor Extraction

Powerful vacuum technology pulls accumulated gas vapors from saturated soil to support underground leak investigation and remediation.

Integrated LEL Gas Monitoring

The system continuously monitors gas concentration levels, providing operators with real-time information during extraction and leak-location activities.

Precision Leak Pinpointing

Designed to help narrow down the location of underground gas leaks, allowing crews to better target excavation and repair efforts.

Multi-Probe Operation

Multiple probes can be used simultaneously to increase coverage and improve the efficiency of leak detection and vapor extraction activities.

High Airflow Capacity

The system moves large volumes of air and gas mixture to support rapid extraction from affected soil.

Adjustable Operating Configuration

Flexible hose and probe arrangements combined with adjustable valves allow the VEU to be configured for different leak investigation and remediation scenarios.

Multiple Mobile Platform Options

Trailer-mounted, skid-mounted, and truck-mounted configurations provide deployment options for different utility fleets, territories, and jobsite conditions.

Detection and Remediation Capability

The same platform can support initial leak pinpointing as well as the removal of residual gas from affected areas.

Benefits

Locate Underground Gas Leaks More Precisely

Vacuum extraction combined with gas concentration monitoring helps crews narrow down potential leak locations before excavation begins.

Reduce Unnecessary Excavation

More precise leak pinpointing can reduce dry holes, unnecessary digging, and avoidable disturbance to streets, sidewalks, landscaping, and other surfaces.

Accelerate Gas Remediation

High-capacity extraction removes accumulated gas from saturated soil, helping crews clear affected areas more efficiently. The source page notes that work traditionally requiring days or weeks can, in some circumstances, be completed in hours.

Improve Jobsite Safety

Continuous LEL monitoring gives crews real-time visibility into gas concentration levels during leak detection and remediation activities.

Lower Restoration and Labor Costs

Limiting unnecessary excavation can reduce the labor, equipment, and restoration expenses associated with larger-scale digging.

Streamline Utility Leak Response

Combining leak pinpointing, gas monitoring, and vapor extraction within one system can simplify the workflow from initial investigation through remediation.

Help Restore Affected Areas Faster

Efficient gas removal can shorten the time needed to address contaminated areas and may allow impacted facilities or locations to return to normal operation sooner.

FAQ

What is an MBW Vapor Extraction Unit used for?

The VEU is used to locate underground gas leaks and extract accumulated gas vapors from surrounding soil. It supports both leak detection and remediation activities.

How does a vapor extraction unit work?

The system uses vacuum pressure to draw air and gas vapors from soil through probes or hoses. Gas concentrations in the extracted air are monitored to help crews identify the likely location of a leak.

Can the VEU both locate a leak and remove residual gas?

Yes. The system is designed to assist with pinpointing underground leaks and extracting residual gas from affected soil.

How can vapor extraction reduce excavation?

By using gas concentration readings to narrow down the leak location, crews can better target where excavation is actually needed, reducing dry holes and unnecessary digging.

Does the VEU monitor gas concentrations during operation?

Yes. An integrated LEL monitoring system continuously measures gas concentrations during extraction.

Can multiple probes be used at the same time?

Yes. The system supports multiple probes simultaneously to expand extraction and detection coverage.

What mounting configurations are available?

MBW Vapor Extraction Units are offered in trailer-mounted, skid-mounted, and truck-mounted configurations.

Is the VEU suitable for urban leak response?

Yes. Truck-mounted configurations can support metropolitan utility operations, while trailer-mounted systems provide flexibility for rural and multi-site deployment.
